The Hatfield Township Police Department is a member of the North Penn Area Tactical Response Team (NPTRT). NPTRT is governed by a Board of Police Chiefs consisting of Chief Mark Toomey, Chief Tim Dickinson (Towamencin Township Police Department), and Chief Thomas Medwid (Lower Salford Township Police Department). The NPTRT is under the direct command and supervision of Chief David Duffy of the Upper Gwynedd Township Police Department. Detective Jay Ciarlello serves as the tactical commander.
The NPTRT was founded in 1982 when four local police departments, Hatfield Township, Lansdale Borough, Towamencin Township, and Upper Gwynedd Township formed a mutual aid agreement and created the team to protect their citizens.
NPTRT has grown over the years to now include eleven local municipal police departments covering fourteen municipalities in the North Penn and Indian Valley areas. NPTRT is comprised of twenty tactically trained police officers and four hostage negotiators. In addition to the police officers there are four specially trained medics from the Volunteer Medical Service Corps assigned to the team.
Officer Michael Burdick, Detective Jay Ciarlello, Officer Patrick Hanrahan,
Detective Richard Hoffner, and Sergeant David McCreesh represent Hatfield Township.
NPTRT responds to high-risk incidents that require specialized training and equipment to resolve such as: hostage situations, barricaded subjects, high-risk warrant services, dignitary protection, and other critical incidents requiring a tactical response.
The North Penn Area Tactical Response Team also participates in several community events during the year and conducts training for local police department personnel. |
